The Importance of Stress-Free, Joyful Family Photos

November 16, 2024  •  Leave a Comment

As parents, capturing memories of your children—especially those with special needs—can feel like a daunting task. Many families struggle to find photographers who understand how to create a calm, welcoming environment for children with unique needs. Whether it's sensory sensitivities, attention challenges, or the need for a slower pace, we recognize that every child deserves an experience where they can feel comfortable, relaxed, and fully themselves.

As parents of a child with special needs ourselves, we understand firsthand the challenges families can face during photo sessions. Our child is active, spirited, and sometimes rumbustious—just like many of yours! It’s this experience that drives us to offer a photography experience that is uniquely suited to children with special needs, making sure that the session is as joyful and stress-free as possible for everyone involved.

.    .

1. A Relaxing, Open-Air Setting: Why Our Private Garden is Ideal

We believe the environment plays a huge role in a child's comfort level. That’s why we’ve chosen to host all of our sessions in a small, private outdoor garden—far removed from the potentially overwhelming and confining space of a studio. The garden is intimate, with no other people around to distract or overwhelm your child. This creates a calm, private space where they can explore, move around, and interact with nature at their own pace.

The beauty of nature—combined with the freedom to roam—helps kids feel less confined, more at ease, and more likely to engage in the session. The natural light and scenic backdrop also make for stunning, authentic family photos that capture your family’s true connection, without the pressure of a busy or crowded environment.

2. Two Photographers for Every Angle

We understand that capturing the perfect moment can be a challenge when kids have special needs, especially when they’re active or need more time to adjust. That’s why we always work with two photographers during your session. This ensures that we never miss an important moment and can capture every angle of your family’s joy, laughter, and connection. One photographer can focus on the child while the other can capture the broader scene, ensuring we tell the full story of your family’s love.

Having two photographers also allows for greater flexibility during the shoot. If your child is more comfortable with one photographer or needs a moment to pause, we can easily adjust and still get those candid, meaningful shots.

3. A Short, 30-Minute Session Tailored to Your Child’s Needs

We know that long photo sessions can be tiring, overwhelming, or frustrating for children with special needs, especially when they’re active and constantly moving. That’s why we keep our sessions short and sweet—just 30 minutes. This time frame ensures that your child doesn’t get overstimulated or exhausted, and that we can capture those precious moments without the pressure of a long, drawn-out session.

We’re skilled at working with children who may need breaks, may be distracted by their environment, or may not want to sit still for too long. We move quickly, but thoughtfully, capturing genuine, spontaneous moments in a way that feels natural and unhurried.

4. Understanding and Patience Every Step of the Way

One of the most important things we bring to the table is understanding. We know that every child is unique, and our job as photographers is to create a space where your child feels safe and happy. Whether your child needs a little more time to warm up, wants to explore the garden before starting the session, or requires breaks throughout the shoot, we’re here to make sure the experience goes smoothly.

Because we have a child with special needs ourselves, we truly understand the importance of patience, flexibility, and open communication. If there are specific sensory needs, behaviors, or preferences, we’re happy to accommodate and adjust our approach to make your child feel comfortable and secure.

5. Capturing Genuine, Candid Moments

Our photography style focuses on natural, candid moments that showcase your family’s true personality and connection. We believe the best photos come from real, spontaneous interactions—whether it’s a quiet moment of connection, joyful laughter, or your child exploring the garden at their own pace.

Because we’ve created a relaxed, non-pressured environment, you can trust that the images we capture will be authentic, and will reflect your family’s unique bond. We aim to document your family’s love in a way that feels genuine, without posing or forcing unnatural moments.

Wedding Details for Brides

**SERIOUSLY, BRIDES**

I know you've got so much on your mind right now. You're probably thinking about how to pack for the honeymoon, or what to wear to your final fitting, or how to make sure your hair and makeup look perfect for that first big family photo after the ceremony. But I want you to stop worrying about all of that stuff, and start thinking about something else: detail photos!

I'm talking about those "getting ready" photos where we see you in your gown and veil, putting on your shoes… maybe even holding a bouquet of flowers? Those are the photos that will help tell your story after the wedding day is over and done with. These are what will show people who didn't attend what it felt like to be there with you as you prepared for your big day. And they'll be able to relive those moments again and again through these images long after they've forgotten everything else from this special day.

And since we're talking about the details here—literally—here's a list of 12 things all brides should consider packing for their detail photos. Many of these items will (or should) be present already, but a few items on this list take a little extra planning in order to include them in your wedding day detail photos. Here is a list of the details I’ll photograph whenever they’re available to me. I recommend bringing all of these that are applicable, plus any other special touches that are important to you:

  1. Dress and veil
  2. Invitation suite (2 copies of the full suite, if possible)
  3. Shoes
  4. Jewelry
  5. Perfume
  6. Something old, new, borrowed, blue
  7. ALL 3 rings – if all 3 are with you, your photo team will be able to photograph the full set. We’ll have time to get them to whoever will be holding them afterward.
  8. Bouquet and/or loose florals – many florists are great about including a few loose flowers/greenery for styled detail photos. Don’t assume that they will automatically do this if you don’t ask, though. It’s also important to coordinate that these florals arrive by the designated time that these detail photos will happen.
  9. Vow book
  10. Any extra ribbon, accents, or items of significance that represent the day
  11. Guest Welcome Bags or Favors
  12. Any gifts or notes from one another

PRO TIP: With the exception of your dress, veil, and the flowers that your florist will deliver, these items should all fit easily into one box or container. This is the easiest way to collect your detail photo items! That way, you only need to make sure your “ detail box” is with you, versus all these odds and ends. The alternative is a good way for items to be forgotten! Doing this also allows your photo team to start right on time, versus needing to begin the day with a search for each of these items.

Get To Know Us

March 15, 2023  •  Leave a Comment

We are a husband and wife team who love to travel, create, and capture life's moments. We're currently working on a project where we'll be traveling around the US, taking pictures of small towns, restaurants, coffee shops, and other cool places that we come across on our journey. We plan to make this into a coffee-table book with some of our photos, but we'd also like to make a short documentary about each place we visit.

We've been married for 17 years now, so we've seen a lot together—and have learned some things along the way. It's always been important for us to stay in touch with each other's interests; it makes us better partners as well as better parents. When we met each other in church, photography was just a hobby for me but now I can say that I have a life time partner to do what I love together. We both knew from the beginning that we wanted to find something that combined both of our talents into something bigger than ourselves—something that could touch people all over the world!

So here we are today: husband and wife photographers/videographers who are ready to share our vision with you!
